A couch with lumbar support has a pad in the lower back of the seat, and the sofas in this collection use adjustable power lumbar, a motor-driven pad you move in or out with a button. This page explains what that feature is designed to do, and what it isn't, before you compare the seven sofas and loveseats below.
Sofas & Loveseats with Adjustable Power Lumbar Support
The collection covers the Seatcraft Vienna, Euphoria, Concerto and Colosseum, the Luminis 365 HeatZeroᵀᴹ and its Big & Tall version, and the Virtuoso 365 HeatZeroᵀᴹ. Each one has adjustable power lumbar, an adjustable power headrest and power recline, and each is offered as a loveseat, a sofa or a sofa and loveseat set.
Power models plug into a standard 110v wall outlet. A licensed electrician can add an outlet if your lumbar sofa sits far from one.
Why Choose An Ergonomic Sofa?
Ergonomic is a loose word, so here is how we use it: an adjustable back sofa, meaning a sofa with features you adjust to your own body instead of one fixed shape. A fixed cushion has one shape. Power lumbar and a power headrest let you change the lower back support and the head angle with buttons, and power recline lets you set the angle of the backrest and footrest the same way.
What Lumbar Support Sofas Are Designed to Do
Lumbar means the lower back. Adjustable power lumbar is designed to move a pad into the curve of your lower back, so you choose how far it presses forward, or pull it back flat if you don't want it. The power headrest next to it is designed to bring your eye line back toward the screen once you recline.
That is the whole claim. These are comfort features you control, and they are not a medical device or a treatment.
Best Sofas for Back Pain: What to Look For
If you searched for the best sofa for back pain, the honest answer is that no sofa can promise a result, and adjustable lumbar is a comfort feature, not treatment. If back pain is a concern, a healthcare provider can advise you. What you can compare are the features and the numbers on each product page:
- Adjustable power lumbar: listed on all seven sofas here, so you set the pad yourself instead of living with a fixed bump.
- Power headrest: also listed on all seven, controlled by button.
- Recline and wall clearance: full recline runs from 66" on the Luminis 365 to 72" on the Euphoria and Colosseum, and wall clearance from 2" to 6.5".
- Foam and frame: the Vienna, Euphoria, Concerto, Colosseum and Luminis 365 list 2.2 density memory foam, and the first four list a reinforced, engineered, kiln-dried solid wood frame.
- Weight capacity: 350 lbs. per seat on the Vienna, Euphoria, Concerto and Luminis 365 sofa, and 400 lbs. per seat on the Colosseum.
Features of Power Reclining Sofas With Lumbar
Beyond lumbar, the models differ in what they add. The Vienna lists a chaise style padded footrest, in-arm storage, cupholders and a USB charging port at each seat's power recline switch. The Euphoria and Concerto add heat and massage with remote control. The Luminis 365, Luminis 365 Big & Tall and Virtuoso 365 add heat and massage, zero-gravity recline and a fold-down center table with a wireless charging pad.
Zero-gravity recline is a position that raises your legs while the back reclines. If that matters to you, see our zero-gravity recline sofas and loveseats.
Types of Back Support Sofas
Among couches with good back support, meaning support you adjust, the types come down to size and extras. The Vienna, Euphoria and Concerto are 85" wide as sofas and need about 6.5" from the wall to recline fully. The Luminis 365 and Virtuoso 365 are 80" wide with a smaller wall clearance, 2" and 4". The Colosseum is 91.5" wide and the Luminis 365 HeatZeroᵀᴹ Big & Tall is 92.5", and both are sized for taller and larger frames in our big and tall sofas and loveseats.
If you want the heat and massage models on their own, they are grouped in heat and massage multimedia sofas.
Upgrade Your Comfort With a Lumbar Support Sofa
Start with the model and size, then use the buttons to set the lumbar, headrest and recline where you want them. Each product's Dimensions and Specifications tabs list the numbers behind the choice.
How to Choose Power Lumbar Sofas
1. Pick a feature package
All seven have lumbar, a headrest and power recline, so the choice is about what else you want. The table groups them by series using each model's product data.
| Series | What it adds | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Lumbar and headrest | Italian Leather, 85" sofa, USB port at each seat's switch, 6.5" wall clearance | Seatcraft Vienna |
| Heat and massage with remote control | Lumbar and headrest plus heat and massage, 85" sofa | Seatcraft Euphoria, Seatcraft Concerto |
| Big & Tall | Wider sofas for larger frames, 91.5" and 92.5" | Seatcraft Colosseum, Luminis 365 HeatZeroᵀᴹ Big & Tall |
| 365 series | Heat and massage, zero-gravity recline, wireless charging pad in the fold-down table, 80" sofa | Luminis 365 HeatZeroᵀᴹ, Virtuoso 365 HeatZeroᵀᴹ |
2. Pick a size
Loveseats fit two, sofas fit three, and a sofa and loveseat set fits five. Check the width on the product page against your wall, and keep walkways beyond the full recline figure on the Dimensions tab.
3. Pick an upholstery and color
The Vienna, Euphoria, Concerto and Colosseum list Italian Leather in eight colors: Black, Brown, Gray, Navy Blue, Red, Smokey Blue, Tawny and Tobacco. The 365 series comes in Ebony and Chestnut. Sample swatches are available for many upholstery options.
